Cinco Ribeiras Fort

The Cinco Ribeiras Fort, also referred as Fort of Nossa Senhora do Pilar or Fort of São Bartolomeu, is located near the port of Cinco Ribeiras, in Angra do Heroísmo, on the southwest coast of Terceira Island. In a dominant position on this part of the coast, built in 1581, it was a fortification for the defense of this anchorage against the attacks of pirates and corsairs, once frequent in this region of the Atlantic Ocean. Presently it is in ruins.
